Energy transition: EOS® makes grid expansion projects sustainable

Written by Kilian Gerbl | Sep 9, 2024

The transition to renewable energies in Europe requires a flexible energy system that efficiently balances power generation and consumption. Electrical Oil Services (EOS®) supports this process with innovative transformer services and a sustainable circular model. Recycling and the application of sustainable and future-oriented practices play a particularly important role in the installation of new transformers and the use of transformer oil.

In Germany, France, the UK and many other countries, wind and solar energy are already important components of the energy mix. However, the geographical distribution of these renewable energies is uneven. While there are many wind turbines in the north of Germany, for example, the major electricity consumers tend to be located in the south and west of the country.

This situation requires not only the expansion of the electricity grids, but also the development of innovative solutions for an efficient infrastructure that optimizes the transport of wind power and everything associated with it.

EOS® is right in the middle of this: Grid expansion projects

Transformers and their insulating oils are essential components for the grid integration of wind and solar energy and play a decisive role in the efficiency and safety of energy transmission.

Electrical Oil Services (EOS®) is in the midst of the grid integration of renewable energies and wind energy in particular. With comprehensive transformer oil services, we are a pioneer and support customers in safe and long-lasting transformer operation.

Examples of grid expansion projects with EOS involvement:

  • Offshore transformer services: Collaboration on Viking Link, a 765 km high-voltage direct current link with a capacity of 1400 MW, which enables the exchange of wind power between Denmark and the UK.
  • The ongoing initiatives in Germany, such as the refilling in cooperation with TenneT for the Südlink wind power line. As the general contractor, EOS® is installing and filling all the transformers.
  • Collaboration with ABO Energy on the Herscheid wind farm near Cologne, Germany.
  • Recurring projects with ScottishPower and NationalGrid in the UK based on a 20-year partnership.

EOS® Closed Loop model supports the circular economy

The EOS® Closed Loop model refers to a circular approach to the use of resources, in this case transformer oil: EOS® collects used insulating oil, recycles it and returns it to the system in as-new condition. In this way, Electrical Oil Services helps to reduce the amount of transformer oil waste (recycle & reuse!) and reduces the need for new fossil raw materials.

At a time when the environmental impact of industrial activities is being critically assessed, the recycling of transformer oil shows how energy suppliers, industrial companies and other manufacturing companies can take responsibility.

Good to know

Thanks to the EOS© Closed Loop model, network operators and industrial companies benefit from greater security in the supply chain, as they are neither affected by challenges such as the Suez Canal blockade nor do they have to have new oil delivered over long distances. Other advantages include the use of existing resources, cost optimization and harmonious integration into sustainability goals.

EOS® conserves resources and promotes independence: EOS® Premium insulating oil

Electrical Oil Services' recycled and certified EOS® Premium transformer oil (acc. to IEC 60296) meets the same technical standards as virgin oil and is used like new insulating oil in transformers and other electrical equipment. This practice reduces dependence on new production and supplies and conserves our planet's resources.

Advantages of the recycled insulating oil EOS® Premium (acc. to IEC 60296):

  • makes companies independent of supply bottlenecks
  • minimises harmful transformer oil waste
  • meets sustainability targets
  • conserves valuable resources
  • reduces dependence on new oil

Use analysis data: The EOS® database for ideal transformer oil management!

Regardless of whether new transformer parks or individual aging transformers are involved, the management of transformer oil analyses is crucial for the service life, efficiency and safety of transformers.

We therefore recommend regular transformer oil sample analyses to our customers. The results of the maintenance should be documented and stored in a database. This allows you to manage a proactive maintenance plan and optimise your operating costs.

Good to know: The EOS® database enables transformer operators to consolidate insulating oil analysis data, identify patterns in the performance and condition of their transformers at a glance and budget and schedule predictive maintenance measures.
