With the massive increase in wind generation over recent years getting this new “green energy” to where it is needed has produced many technical and environmental challenges.
With an understandable reluctance to build more steel towers to carry the electricity from the windy Scottish coast to homes and businesses in England, project partners Scottish Power and NGC decided that the best technical and environmental solution was to install a 600kV Direct Current subsea cable between the Ayrshire and Deeside coastlines, a distance of some 250 miles!
A DC cable over long distances is a much more efficient and cost effective solution than the normal AC transmission lines that we are used to in the UK. Installing it in the Irish Sea means it is out of site and not adding to visual pollution on land.
At each end of the cable there is an AC to DC convertor station and 6 large HVDC transformers, two poles of three phases with each single phase transformer holding 115,000 litres of Inhibited Mineral Insulating Oil
EOS was proud to be engaged by Siemens UK who along with Prysmian were engaged to construct this £1.1 billion project.
With the project under massive scrutiny and critical paths to be met, the EOS and Siemens project engineers worked together to produce an efficient schedule of vacuum, fill and process resulting in transformers that were filled with high quality Inhibited Insulating Oil, delivered on spec and on time ready for energisation.
EOS operates state of the art Mobile Processing Units that are modern, efficient, self-contained and manned by skilled operators with many years’ experience working for large UK and European OEMs, Generators and utilities.
Our Project Engineers can come to your site to assess specific needs, discuss best oil handling practise, train your staff and/or advise on the best course of action for your transformer insulation system.
